Darius Kinney of Kean is truly a fantastic Division 3 RB prospect. Standing 6’0 and weighing around 220 pounds, while running in the 4.5 range, Kinney’s potential transcends the level of competition he played. A bruising, power runner, Darius blew up as a senior, amassing 1,208 yards on 158 carries and scored 7 touchdowns. Ironically, he also averaged 7 YPC for the year. Kinney attracted NFL scouts to tiny Kean University, and looks to earn a shot to make an NFL roster this summer.
Shaun DePasquale: Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today Darius. Can you tell me where you’re training for the NFL Draft?
Darius Kinney: G.T.A Training in Atlanta, Georgia.
SD: What do you feel are your strengths and weaknesses (things you may need to work on)?
DK: I believe I need to work on running with a lower pad level, but other than that I can do it all!
SD: How do you feel your time at Kean helped you prepare for the NFL?
DK: It is funny that you ask because before I got to Kean I was thinking D3 football was a joke until I got hit. It wasn’t until that moment I realized football is still football on any level. You have to train like you’re going to war. My coach prepared me more mentally than physically. Because if you can out-smart your opponent with talent on top of that, then nobody can stop you.
SD: What do you feel you bring to an NFL offense?
DK: The question is what I can’t bring to an NFL offense. I can block, run, catch, PR, KR, all for the love of the game. I can even play defense as long as my team wins, but I can only do what a coach let me do. At the end of the day I have to listen to my coach and do whatever he tells me.
SD: Have you received any feedback from NFL scouts?
DK: The Eagles and the Saints are the only ones I’ve been in contact with. (meaning talk to in person). My head coach said the Redskins came for film, but that is all I’m aware of at the moment.
SD: Have you been invited to any all star games?
DK: Yes the National bowl, BSN showcase, Dream bowl, All-American bowl and others but i can’t name them off the top of my head.
SD: Do you have a chip on your shoulder coming from a small and battling for attention of the NFL?
DK: I have the whole potato on my shoulder. I work just as hard as any other player that has the same dream of playing in the NFL. I refuse to let my family down, my coaches, and most of all myself. I should have went D1 out of high school (Hudson Catholic) but my grades always held me back.
SD: What has been your greatest accomplishment, athletically or personally ?
DK: I feel as though I haven’t accomplished anything. I have to keep working until I can answer this question the way I really want to.
SD: If you could have dinner with any 3 people, living or otherwise, who would they be and why?
DK: Megan Good, Beyonce and Megan Fox lol. That would be the best dinner besides my grandmother Thanksgiving cooking.
SD: Give me the name of a teammate that isn’t talked about nearly enough.
DK: 3 of them. Louis Hanks, Deandre Fowlkes, and Chris Johnson.
SD: What message would you like to send to NFL teams about Darius Kinney?
DK: I wont let you down because I can’t let myself down!!! I will score touchdowns for free my rookie year if I have to, but after that I need to get paid haha
SD: Last question, what would be your first purchase with an NFL paycheck?
DK: I’m moving my family to a better living environment.
SD: Thank you so much for your time Darius. Good luck in your journey!
DK: Thank you for having me
